Fast rotating neutron stars can be destabilized by the so-called Chandrasekhar-Friedman-Schutz (CFS) instability, i.e. certain nonaxisymmetric oscillation modes can become unstable due to the emission of gravitational radiation for very high rotation rates of the star.
