The name of Foggitt and Foggett share a common origin, the spelling differing because of spelliing chanegs in the ancient past. There is no relation to the name of Froggett (-att) which has an entirely unrelated origin. The name of Foggitt is derived froma variety of grass -Holcus Lanatus, commonly known as Yorkshire Fog. In former times this grass was grown in meadows for animal feed during the winter and was known as Foggage The meadows in which this grass was grown were known as Foggetts and the labourers who worked in such pastures became known by the same name. The earliest record so far found of the name was that of a John Foggett, who was recorded as being a tenant in the parish of Thornborough, near Corbridge in Northumberland in 1484. Thereafter the name is encountered mainly in the North-east of England until such time as the mobility of the inhabitants increased so that the name spread more widely in subsequent centuries.
