In Scotland, and later England, the surname of Huntley (originally Huntly) was derived from Hunting in the Leigh - which is a sort of 'meadow'. It is believed that those given this name were cunning and intelligent about their hunting methods where, instead of being out in the open fields themselves, they would hide in the forest and wait, or put out bait for, the particular game that they sought for their evening meal.
