Soezen is a Turkish surname meaning "Orator" or "Speaker" In 1922 Atatuerk changed the Turkish vocabulary from the Arabic to the Latin script. One further action was that titles bestowed by the Sultan were abolished. Thus in this example, those carrying the title "Hattip Sade" which would be the equivalent of Lord Orator, was changed to the plain Soezen, another word for "Speaker." In doing the changeover to the Latin Script, the O acquired an Umlaut (ie represented by two dots over the O) as in the German. Sometimes the name thus appears alternatively written as Sozen, Sozen with an Umlaut, or Soezen, the latter pronouncing the umlaut phonetically as oe.
