A not proven but plausible explanation: In medieval times, "Bohle" was a term used in parts of Germany (it is still in use today in East Frisia) for an independent farmstead. Owners or other inhabitants of these farmsteads frequently got last names like "auf der Bohlen" or "von der Bohlen" which morphed into simply "Bohlen" after a time. Last names like "Bohle" and "Bohland" or village names like "Bohlen", "Bohlendorf" or "Böhlen" have most likely the same origin.
