family folklore is that the name originated in the Oldham/Rochdale area where there are still many Woolfendens. They were importers of wool from the fen district near Cambridge. The name is also well known in Cambridge where I now live. A cousin has traced our ancestors back to the 1690s, although the name is likely to be older than that. Common Christian names in our line are Thomas and John. When my parents moved to London in 1960 there were only four Woolfendens in the London telephone directory. I have been told the spelling Wolfenden was mainly due to clergy not being sure of the correct spelling. If our family folklore is correct, then the name should have two "o"s. Our name has two "o"s throughout to the 1690s. I have a corner cabinet and a grandfather clock dating back to the 1790s which were supposed to have originally been in the Red Lion in Rochdale run by a Woolfenden who must have been very wealthy as he built many houses in Rochdale which were in the family until the 1950s. Perhaps somebody has more information on that.
